Dinner with Jill Ker Conway

On Monday, April 26, 1999, former Smith President Jill Ker Conway (1975-1985) dined and talked with the Smith College Club of Long Island, at the University Center at Adelphi University.

After a cocktails and hors d'oeuvres hour in which Dr. Conway made a point of meeting and chatting with everyone who attended, we dined on pasta and a variety of other buffet offerings.

But the best part was after dinner, when she gave a talk about what she's been doing since she left Smith.

She's been living in Boston and teaching at M.I.T., while also serving as a trustee to three universities (including Adelphi), two hospitals and many corporations. Dr. Conway told us that she only gets about four hours of sleep a night (with occasional naps during the day), and uses the late night and very early morning hours to do much of her writing.

Dr. Conway has also kept up her prolific writing career, including a mystery novel that she had been writing with the former president of Mount Holyoke College. The book is called "Overnight Float" and should be out at the end of this year or early next year. The two former presidents collaborated under the pen name of Claire Munnings.

She has also been working on an academic book, and is looking forward to writing about coming to Smith and her life there.

To cap off the evening, Dr. Conway signed copies of her latest book, "In Her Own Words."
