West of Boston

text of an email from the Alumnae Association:

Some of you are already into the full swing of pecan sales while others of you have chosen to be out of the swingthis year. Either way, I thought you might be interested in knowing what the West of Boston Smith Club has been up to.

According to Polly Vernimen, club president, just at the point where any enthusiasm for the fundraising project itself was gone, and volunteer resources were slim, one of the most passionate members of this project begannegotiating with Millican Pecan Company in Texas and within one week the club had "rocketed pecans into the 21stcentury" complete with a club coordinator who will field questions as well as manage orders for those who prefer not to use the Web.

Although customers do have to pay for shipping, the plus factor is that there is a lot more variety (plus old favorites) including flavored pecans, gift tins, pies, etc. Of course with a third party the profit is less for the club (Polly estimated it being at about 40%). The club has their own page on the pecan company's website, and they designed labels that will be stuck on any item purchased on behalf of their club.
